Zed

zed.dev/

Zed is a code editor built from scratch in Rust, pitched with the line "Your last, next editor," and built by the team behind Atom, Electron, and Tree-sitter. Rather than a features grid, the homepage runs a live-looking activity feed of recent commits across the zed, cloud, and zed.dev repositories, plus real download counts for individual extensions (HTML at 6.8M, a Git tool at 1.7M). Its AI positioning centers on running parallel agents across a project and an in-house edit-prediction model it calls Zeta2, alongside a native debugger and built-in Git support. Endorsement quotes come from named, checkable figures in the field — Elixir creator José Valim, React's Dan Abramov, and D3's Mike Bostock — rather than anonymous praise.

Zed design review: how the homepage is built

At 8,206 desktop pixels, Zed progresses from an editor hero to testimonials, feature grids, open-source proof, AI and extension material, a letter, recent posts, and a blue footer. The off-white page uses a faint graph-paper field and thin grey rules; #174cdc supplies the recurring button and footer blue, while #a8baea appears in pale interface washes. The italic serif hero and section headings contrast with compact monospaced-looking body copy; metadata identifies plexSerif for display and writer for body text. Product screenshots function as working documents, with windows, code, and chat taking most of the visual space.

Above the fold

A slim navigation row precedes an announcement for “Introducing: Delta, a multiplayer environment for coding with agents”. The centered hero sets “Your last next editor” in large blue italic type above the subhead, two adjacent buttons, and a platform note. Below it, three equal columns titled “Fast”, “Agentic”, and “Collaborative” sit directly above a wide editor screenshot with a “Watch Demo” control.

Proof and editor features

The next desktop band places six developer testimonials beneath “Trusted by world-class developers & industry leading teams”, with one Anthropic quote enlarged in a bordered central card. “Zed Just Works” then introduces two large screenshot cards, “Parallel Agents” and “Debugger”, followed by a three-column feature row for “Agentic Editing”, “Native Git Support”, and “Edit Prediction”. A second text-only row names “Remote Development”, “Multibuffer editing”, and “Vim-friendly”.

Community, AI, and extensions

“Open Source” interrupts the pale page with avatar strips above and below four figures: “10,091 Forks”, “88,754 Stars”, “2,163 Contributors”, and “510 PRs merged last month”. “AI that works the way you code” uses a left-side tab stack beside an editor capture. “Growing extensions ecosystem” presents a four-column grid including HTML, Git Firefly, TOML, and Java. “Built with ultimate care” returns to a wide code image and six capability cells.

Closing section and footer

The lower page changes scale for a paper-like card labelled “A LETTER” and headed “From the team”, with three small author avatars. “The latest from Zed” follows with three post cards: “Introducing Delta”, “Sandboxing”, and “Hidden Gems: Part 4”. A large app icon anchors “Daily drive with Zed”, with the two original action buttons beneath. The saturated-blue footer arranges Product, Resources, Company, and Social links in four narrow columns.

On mobile

At 390 pixels, the nav is absent from the captured top while the Delta announcement remains above a two-line hero. “Download now” becomes a full-width blue button and “Clone source” an outlined button. The editor screenshot, introductory columns, testimonials, and feature cards stack into one reading path. The central Anthropic testimonial retains its border. Extension cards become a list, and the blue footer turns the four desktop columns into consecutive link groups.

Worth borrowing

  • A three-column value strip can lead directly into the product interface.
  • One enlarged testimonial can focus an otherwise even proof grid.
  • Repeating hero actions above a link-heavy footer gives the page closure.
