Interactive demo
An interactive demo is a clickable version of the product embedded on a page, letting visitors try real features before signing up or talking to sales.

- Product tour, Clickable demo, Live demo, Playground, Interactive walkthrough
What is an interactive demo?
An interactive demo replaces "watch us use it" with "use it yourself". On SaaS sites it takes a few forms: a guided click-through of screenshots with hotspots, a sandboxed copy of the real app, or a playground where developers run real requests. AssemblyAI closes its homepage with a no-code playground block and a "TRY IT OUT" button; Temporal places a live code-and-timeline demo directly beneath its hero.
It sits between a free trial and a sales demo. The visitor gets hands-on proof without creating an account, and the company doesn't need a salesperson on a call. That makes it especially useful for products that need setup or data before they show value.
Good interactive demos are short, start already in an interesting state with sample data loaded, and end with a clear next step. Weak ones are twenty-step tours that hijack scrolling, or embedded apps so slow they make the product look worse than a screenshot would.
When to use an interactive demo, and when not to
Use it for
- Value needs contextThe product only makes sense once you click through it, and static screenshots undersell it.
- Setup-heavy productsA real trial needs integrations or data, so a pre-loaded demo shows the result immediately.
- APIs and modelsDevelopers want to send a request and see the response before reading docs.
Avoid it for
- Simple productsIf one screenshot explains it, a demo just adds load time.
- Free signup is instantWhen the real product is one click away, send people there instead.
- Slow embedsA heavy iframe that delays the page costs more than the demo earns.
Anatomy of an interactive demo
- 1FrameA browser or app window that marks the area as the product.
- 2Sample statePre-filled data so the first view is already meaningful.
- 3GuidanceHotspots, tooltips or a step counter showing where to click next.
- 4ControlsInputs, buttons or a prompt box the visitor can actually use.
- 5Exit CTAA signup or demo button at the end of the tour.
Common interactive demo variants
1. Guided click-through
Screenshots with hotspots that advance step by step.
2. Live sandbox
A real, limited instance of the product with sample data.
3. Developer playground
An input, a run button and the real API or model output.
4. Working hero editor
The product's own editor rendered as the hero, so the first thing visitors see is the tool they would use. Kirki leads with a working editor mockup this way.
Often confused with
Interactive demo vs. product video
A product video shows the product being used on rails; an interactive demo lets the visitor drive.
Interactive demo vs. call to action
"Book a demo" calls to action lead to a sales call with a person; an interactive demo is self-serve and available right on the page.
Interactive demo vs. product screenshot
A screenshot is a static picture of the UI; an interactive demo is a usable version of it.
Frequently asked
Is an interactive demo better than a free trial?
It's faster to value but shallower. Use a demo when a trial needs setup or data to be useful, and keep the trial as the next step.
Should an interactive demo be gated behind an email form?
Ungated on the homepage. Gating it turns a quick look into a commitment and loses the visitors who just wanted to see the product.
